Read the system, not the promise.

Technology desk / staff profile

Nadia Calder writes about machines, systems, and the people who build them. Her work follows emerging technology past the press release and into the places where engineering meets incentives, failure, ambition, and unintended consequences.

Her desk covers artificial intelligence, robotics, cybernetics, hardware, infrastructure, surveillance systems, engineering failures, security vulnerabilities, and emerging technology. The first question is usually mechanical: what is the system actually doing? The second is institutional: who benefits from describing it another way?

Calder's reporting treats technical claims as things that can be opened, measured, compared, stress-tested, and placed back into context. Hype is not evidence. A polished dashboard is not the underlying system. A successful demonstration is not the same thing as a reliable product.

Off the clock

Calder rebuilds old electronics she has no practical reason to keep, listens to synth-heavy music while working, and has a shelf of obsolete devices that somehow survives every attempt at decluttering. Her home is conspicuously short on smart appliances. She trusts switches.

First instinctUnderstand the mechanism before discussing the narrative around it.
Evidence preferenceArchitecture, measurements, specifications, tests, failure reports, reproducible behavior, and primary technical sources.
Editorial pressure testWhere does the claim stop being true, and what happens when the system leaves the demo environment?

CURRENT ASSIGNMENT / ROBOT GAMES FOLLOW-UP

After the Finish Line: What Did the Games Actually Prove?

Question: Once the medals, crashes, and highlight reels are stripped away, which capabilities demonstrated in Beijing represent meaningful progress in locomotion, manipulation, recovery, autonomy, and reliability?

Build the newsroom's synthesis piece from the final results and the specialist reporting. Separate genuine capability gains from category tricks, controlled conditions, and spectacle.

No decorative résumé mythology. Published work, methods, sources, and corrections carry the weight.
